Gurugram: Since robbery cases are on the rise in the city, Gurugram police asked the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) to include six places on Gurugram-Jaipur highway in the list of areas where night-vision CCTV cameras would be installed. The six places are situated on the 13.5 kilometre stretch of the expressway.

The increasing number of robbery cases made the police to ask the GMDA to include the spots targeted by criminals into the list where the CCTV cameras would be installed. The six places are Shankar Chowk, Sector 17/18 Road, Iffco Chowk, Signature Tower, Rajiv Chowk, and Hero Honda Chowk, according to a report in Hindustan Times.

Reportedly, about 1,000 cameras will be installed in the city. GMDA officials said that a 600-kilometre fibre optics network would be laid in the first phase of the project which is expected to be completed by June. According to the police, cameras would be installed on both sides of the road. Police commissioner KK Rao said that the surveillance system would detect the registration number of the vehicle. The cameras would also have intelligent video analytics for detailed surveillance.

The last robbery case was reported on Wednesday, fifth case in January, in which a man was robbed of his phone and Rs 2,000 cash by four men who offered him a life near Sohna city police station. Since many people take the route home to Manesar or Delhi via shared cabs, the assailants, usually a gang of four people, target them. They offer a shared cab ride at a low fare and after riding some distance, the assailants rob people of their valuables by threatening them at knife or gunpoint.
