Samsung Starts Selling Refurbished Galaxy Smartphones in US

Samsung, as expected, has started officially selling refurbished Galaxy smartphones in the US. The South Korean company is currently selling refurbished units of the Samsung Galaxy S6, Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge, Samsung Galaxy S5, Samsung Galaxy S4, Samsung Galaxy Note 4, and Samsung Galaxy Note 3 from its official site.

Listed under a page titled “Samsung Certified Pre-Owned Phones and Refurbished Products,” the Galaxy smartphones now available to buy in the US are carrier locked. Samsung is offering up to $200 discount on the purchase of the Galaxy S6 Edge (32GB), Galaxy S6 (32GB), and Galaxy Note 4 refurbished smartphones. On other models, the company is offering up to $150 discount on the purchase of the Galaxy S5, up to $130 on the purchase of the Samsung Galaxy S4, and up to $250 on the purchase of the Galaxy Note 3. It’s worth noting that consumers will have to pay the entire amount upfront.

Samsung touts that the phones selling under “pre-owned” category have been completely refurbished by Samsung engineers, include new headphones and charger, and will come with one year warranty.

Last month, Samsung was said to launch the programme to sell refurbished used versions of its premium smartphones to “sustain earnings momentum.” It’s however unclear as of now whether Samsung will sell refurbished smartphones in other markets outside the US.

Samsung’s move to sell refurbished phones is not unique as Apple already sells refurbished iPhone models at a discount in some countries including the US.

Earlier, Apple’s plan to sell refurbished iPhone models in India was reportedly rejected by the government.
