Apple iPad 2017 runs on iOS 10.3.3 and can deliver battery backup of over 10 hours with ease.
The availability of truly big-screen smartphones has made working on them a lot easier and ruled out the need for a separate tablet. Yet the tablets are not going away anywhere soon. According to the latest International Data Corporation’s (IDC) Personal Computing Device Tracker, about 7,22,000 tablets were shipped in India in Q2 2017. This indicates a growth rate of 2.9% from the previous quarter.
Lenovo has lost its market share in the smartphone segment, but it is still a force to reckon with in the tablet space. It is the number one tablet brand in India and has a market share of 21.8%. Its shipment grew by 12.6% during the period. Samsung holds the second position with a market share of 20%. Canadian company Datawind, which shot to fame with entry-level Aakash tablets, has slipped to the third position after its shipments declined by 9.4% in the last quarter. The company has a market share of 18%. Indian company iBall also witnessed a decline (9%) in shipments but still controls 15.2% of the market share.
Cupertino giant Apple registered a healthy growth of 49% over the last quarter and is the fifth biggest tablet company in Indian right now. The IDC report points out that growth in the tablet segment is largely driven by demand in government projects, education sector and enterprises.
The report also suggests that tablet shipments in the consumer segment declined by 13.8% in Q2 2017 and the implementation of the goods and services tax (GST) was the main reason for it. “Uncertainty about the levy of the new tax structure restricted the stocking of inventory and in turn leading to limited sell-in of tablets in the country,” said Celso Gomes, associate market analyst, Client Devices, IDC India. “Shipments of the consumer segment is expected to be better in the second half of the year recovering from two quarters of consecutive decline as the market prepares for upcoming festival season,” said Jaipal Singh , senior market analyst, IDC India.
